THE LEAD: TAX BILL COULD HURT THE POOR MORE THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT

Under the Senate GOP’s tax bill, poor Americans would lose billions in federal benefits according to the Congressional Budget Office.

CNN reports, “This is largely because the legislation would eliminate the individual mandate, which requires nearly all Americans to get health insurance or pay a penalty. This would result in 13 million fewer people having coverage in 2027, the CBO found.”

The people who would forgo coverage would have low or moderate incomes and would have qualified for Medicaid or federal help paying for health expenses the CBO found.

The New York Times did this analysis of what the tax bill would look like for 25,ooo middle-class families.

Professor Ted Thornhill (Image: News Press/FGCU)

Ted Thornhill, an assistant professor of sociology at Florida Gulf Coast University, will teach the course, starting in January. The (Fort Myers, Fla.) News-Press reports that Thornhill “plans to cover everything from ways to challenge white supremacy to the ideologies, laws, policies and practices in this country that have allowed for ‘white racial domination over those racialized as non-white,’ according to a course description.”

50 students have signed up to take the class so far, but it’s the course name that has drawn the most attention.

“Thornhill points out that he is not the first to use the term white racism,” according to the News-Press report. “Others who study race and racism have used it in books, research papers and other literature. A “White Racism” class has been offered at the University of Connecticut since the mid-1990s.”

The Daily Pennsylvanian featured this rather surprising crime report in it’s pages yesterday:

“An 86-year-old woman was arrested last week for attempting to rob the TD Bank at 3735 Walnut St. Police told Fox News that the woman walked into the bank with her walker and pulled out a revolver before demanding $400 from employees.

The woman, who was identified as Emily Coakley by bank employees, attempted to rob the bank on Nov. 21. Penn and Philadelphia police responded to reports of the robbery at approximately 2 p.m., after which Coakley was detained and taken into custody without incident, said Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush in an email.”

She couldn’t possibly be still paying off her student loans, could she?

Uloop’s Alicia Geigel feels you, though, writing “Between the stress of school or work and holidays, for most of us, our health and well-being ends up being put on the back burner. Because of this, it’s almost impossible to stay cold-free during the harsh few months of winter.”

And remember, you can use Uloop to find a part time job on your campus, connect with a tutor or get a head start on housing for next year.
